Four-part series following habitual shop-lifters, examining their behavior and the reasons they give for it

Why do people steal? According to police, most of Britain's shoplifters support drug habits, while some are propelled by greed or the sheer thrill of it. Director Saul Dibb's new series explores this flip side of consumerism, and in his first film he travels to Derby to meet four addicts whose daily routine revolves around stealing, selling, then buying drugs with their profits. Dibb's talent for connecting with his subjects provides a rare, honest glimpse into a sad, sordid world most of us are lucky enough never to experience. There's a 38-year-old former teacher who steals to order, a gay couple whose shoplifting ability is marred by their descent into heroin addiction and a 30-year-old prolific thief who has been shoplifting since he was 12.—Aziz
