A woman escapes from a mental hospital, intent on getting back the life she thinks was stolen from her by her twin sister. Instead, she walks into her worst nightmare.
After their father's death in an accident for which she blames herself, Tracy Wrey is so devastated that she becomes psychotic and is institutionalized. When her identical twin sister Jennifer, a famous romance novelist, visits on the anniversary of their father's death, Tracy snaps, drugs Jennifer, assumes her identity, and escapes, hell-bent on having a life of adventure and freedom for the first time in 15 years. Instead, she is plunged into Jennifer's nightmarish world, dealing with a fan club president that is obsessed with her, the toyboy lover who is blackmailing her, and the teenage daughter who hates her. While the real Jennifer languishes in the institution, Tracy grows desperate without the powerful drugs she needs to control her state of mind. Before she knows it, she is hurtling down a path strewn with violence and murder. Tracy checks out a now-subdued Jennifer from the institute, intent on leaving her to deal with the aftermath of her horrible mistakes. That's when Jennifer leads Tracy to a previously-locked room--and where Tracy finds out the shocking truth about her stolen life.
Twin sisters are having very different experiences. Tracy is forcibly locked in a mental institution after their father dies. While the other, Jennifer, wears posh form-fitting dresses while shopping.
At their monthly visit, Tracy stabs Jennifer in the neck with a syringe and swaps places with her twin. An attending nurse almost catches her but manages to make a clean getaway.
With her newfound freedom, Tracy drives with the windows down and ignores Jennifer's phone calls. She is late for a big book release event (Jennifer is a writer), and her friend Karen is freaking out. Tracy has no idea what is happening but goes with it.
Jennifer wakes up in the hospital and tries to explain who she is. She gets hysterical, and the staff sedates her,
At the book release party, Tracy gives a short speech about her NEXT book about a patient in a mental hospital. Chad loves the idea and invites her out to dinner. Tracy agrees, but she doesn't know he is married with kids. Speaking of kids, Tracy is surprised to see her teen daughter at home.
Layla doesn't realize that her mom is a different person because she is more focused on her deadbeat boyfriend, Rob.
Apparently, Jennifer gets around and has been sleeping with an orderly from the hospital. He has been blackmailing her to keep the twin a secret. Tracy is super disturbed and kicks him out of her house when he comes to get his weekly payment.
The violent outbursts continue, and Jennifer is constantly being restrained. She convinces a nurse to give her a phone to call her daughter but she is on so much medication she can't remember the number.
Tracy is being tied up in a different way. Her date goes well with married Chad, and they have sexy time. Tracy has a change of heart and stops things before they go too far with Chad.
The orderly shows up for more money, and Tracy gets into an altercation with him, stabbing and killing him. Then she disposes of his body by throwing it out of her car, leaving him on the side of the road. She checks herself in the ER and tries to get on some antidepressants.
Meanwhile, Jennifer randomly overpowers a janitor and escapes the mental hospital. She gets into a car crash trying to our run the police, I think. Jennifer is admitted into the same hospital that Tracy is in. The ER doctor is very confused.
Tracy is released from the hospital, and Layla is concerned about her mother's mental health. Tracy is having a hard time, and the cracks start to show. She has a public meltdown, and it gets bad press. Karen, the PR agent, confronts Tracy, and Tracy ALMOST kills her with a trophy. Layla and Rob almost catch Tracy, but she hands them an envelope of money to get them out of her hair before Karen can wake up. Tracy throws the body into a ravine.
It is time for Tracy and Jennifer's monthly visit. Tracy inquires about a locked room in the house to an almost comatose Jennifer. When she realizes Jennifer isn't spilling the tea, Tracy checks her sister out of the hospital. She plans to frame her for the murders and go on the run.
Tracy takes her sister and straps Jennifer into a wheelchair.
Layla comes home and is very confused. Jennifer explains that Tracy had a psychotic break when her father died, and she actually is Jennifer. She is Layla's mother. It is really confusing to write about but makes sense in the movie.
The twin sisters go to the locked room together, and it is full of photos of them as kids and adults. The photos bring back memories for the real Jennifer, and she understands why her sister did what she did.
The real Jennifer voluntarily checks herself back into the mental hospital and seems to be getting better. She is working on a children's book about twins. (thanks to lifetimeuncorked)
