The ancient alien race known as "Arisians" are powerful telepaths, but their physical skills have degenerated. Needing to use agents for their conflicts against their Eddorian rivals, they provide these agents with the Lens. It is an empathic weapon which grants its owners with telepathic and other psychic abilities, but it can kill anyone else who attempts to use it. A dying Lensman passes his Lens to the farm boy Kimball "Kim" Kinnison, who is secretly the heir to a previous family line of Lensmen.
