A small French town somewhere in the 1960's. It's the eve of the space age. A middle-aged art teacher paints skies. He becomes intrigued by what he sees on his paintings and starts using bigger canvas and more experimental ways of painting. Two boys built a rocket on the grounds of a man who never speaks. When he's not improving or test driving his rally car or trying to sweet talk a nude model or a lab technician who studies patterns, the local gym teacher and amateur racer tells them about outer space.
