The Peacock Princess--made by the Shanghai Animation Film Studio--is based on a folktale from the Dai peoples of southern China. Prince Zhaoshutun stumbles across a gathering of magical women who can transform into peacocks, and is enamored by one in particular named Nan Ma Na Well. When a bird of prey threatens one of the peacock, he kills it using a bow and arrow. With the help of a lake goddess, the prince declares his love for Nan Ma Na Well and she agrees to marry him. Meanwhile, a power-hungry man attempts to foil the marriage plans, as he wants his daughter to marry the prince. He recruits a sorcerer to send enemy troops towards the kingdom, which forces Zhaoshutun to leave for battle right after his wedding. The man then tells the populace that the princess is an evil spirit. He convinces the king, who reluctantly sentences her to death. On the execution ground, Nan Na Ma Well turns into a peacock and escapes. Subsequently, the prince returns and discovers the plot against him. He vows to find his wife. The lake goddess appears again and guides him to Nan Ma Na Well, who has returned to a peacock country in the sky. The couple reunites to rule the land.—Anonymous
