Suzette, the daughter of a miserly farmer, loves Henri, a villager who is the son of a convict. But Susan's father won't hear of her union with Henri.. During a raucous fair Henri surprises the lord of the manor making advances to Suzette. Mad with jealousy, he hurts his rival with a knife and is sent to jail. When he is released, Henri returns to the village only to find out that Suzette died while giving birth to a little girl - whose father he is. He goes to see the lord and his wife, who raise the kid.
