Suzette, the daughter of a miserly farmer, loves Henri, a villager who is the son of a convict. But Susan's father won't hear of her union with Henri.. During a raucous fair Henri surprises the lord of the manor making advances to Suzette. Mad with jealousy, he hurts his rival with a knife and is sent to jail. When he is released, Henri returns to the village only to find out that Suzette died while giving birth to a little girl - whose father he is. He goes to see the lord and his wife, who raise the kid. His first reaction is to claim his child but plagued by his conscience, he decides to disappear from his child's life.—Guy Bellinger
