Summaries

"Karussell der Jugend" (The Youth Carousel) was an "invention" of the then district youth worker Rudolf Hilger and was later continued by the district and city youth workers Klaus Suter and Paul Bolley. It was set up in a huge tent for teenagers and young adults during the fair. There were lots of performances by well-known rock and beat bands, but also dance, cabaret, church services, theater and more with the aim of offering young people an alternative - especially to the many beer stands at the fair. There was no alcohol in the tent. In 1970, the WDR joined in as a co-organizer so that it could make recordings during the events. The station brought spectacular bands to Soest, including Kraftwerk and Can.—WDR
