Summaries

KARIAKOO is a short VR documentary experience that takes you on a one-day journey through the central market district in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania - one of the fastest growing cities in the world. Formerly a colonial stronghold, termed the "Carrier Corps," Kariakoo has transformed itself and today is a cultural and economic powerhouse. For those with the savvy to navigate the area's invisible infrastructure of information barter, street-based offices, and tribal jokes, Kariakoo is where you go to 'make it', in business, politics, and even music. The project invites global public audiences to experience dynamic city life in Kariakoo - in contrast with the dominant media images of rural African poverty. KARIAKOO presents an opportunity to build understanding among donor countries, companies, civil society and academia shaping international trade, development and sustainable cities. The production involved local content creator communities in Tanzania, artists and influencers. The experimental style pushes the 360 medium and employs techniques such as point-of-view shooting, 2D representations in a 360 environment, illustration and animation, and musical soundscapes.
