One day, while Bhagyanathan lay on a cot in the veranda of his hut, his two daughters, Karunya and Sowmya, bid him goodbye in the morning. His eyes welled with tears as Sowmya headed to school, while Karunya, a rank holder in her class, set off to work in a small weaving company owned by a relative. Bhagyanathan and his wife Vishalam were quarry workers, toiling under the sun, engaged in hard labor. Despite their meager income, they aspired to provide an excellent education and a comfortable life for their children.
Tragedy struck when Bhagyanathan's legs were injured in an accident, rendering him unable to work. The relative, empathizing with their plight, offered a job for Karunya in his company. However, the burden of her employment weighed heavily on Bhagyanathan.
Karunya diligently worked, ensuring her sister's fees were paid regularly. A new opportunity arose when the relative proposed sending girls to the Gulf to work in a garment company, promising excellent pay and arranged accommodation. The semblance of a good life was shattered when villagers stumbled upon a news story about a girl arrested in a mobile prostitution ring in Nagercoil, bearing a resemblance to Karunya. Bhagyanathan, enraged by the news, berated the informant and discarded the newspaper. Unconvinced, Vishalam sought the truth, visiting the police station in Nagercoil to meet the girl identified as Swetha. To her dismay, she discovered that Swetha was indeed Karunya. Refusing to acknowledge her mother, Karunya spoke to her in Tamil. However, when Vishalam turned away, Karunya's tears revealed the depth of her anguish, bringing the poignant movie to a close.
