Gangaram alias Ganga has been raised by his foster parents who reside in the village thus he gets accustom to village life. 24 years later his birth parents multi-millionaire Avinash and his wife Radha comes to ask him to move into their bungalow located in the city to which Ganga agrees and goes to bid farewell to his friends and girlfriend Saawni. While in the city Ganga is introduced to his elder brother, Milind, his wife, Supriya, and his younger brother; Ganga finds it very hard to adjust to the city life and is often scuffed at. Ganga bids tearful farewell to his village and it's inhabitants, and travels to the city of his birth parents. He finds that he has an elder brother, his wife, Supriya, and younger siblings too, as well as his birth parents, Avinash (Shakti Kapoor) and Radha (Himani Shivpuri), who are all very wealthy. Soon word spreads about Ganga being the latest eligible bachelor, and Ganga is asked to marry socialite, Tina (Rinke Khanna), as per his parents' wishes. Ganga's mother is super protective of him and protects him from the ire of his father, who wants to punish Ganga for his pranks across the village. Ganga loves his mother very much and cannot live without her even for a single moment.
Village lout Iqbal (Nandu Madhav) has his eye on Saavni and on one occasion Ganga saves Saavni from Iqbal's sexual assault.Saavni's parents want her to marry outside of the village, but she is adamant that she will marry Ganga. Saavni asks Ganga to talk to his father about their marriage.
When Ganga initiates his marriage conversation, his parents inform him that his biological parents live in the city and want him to settle there. When Ganga was a kid, he was diagnosed with Anemia and his biological parents Avinash (Shakti Kapoor) and Radha (Himani Shivpuri) consult a village doctor brought by his secretary Birbal (Atul Kale) after all city doctors give up hope.The village doctor advises them to put Ganga in an environment with lots of farm animals for the next 20-25 years to build his immunity slowly. As such, the family found a village couple and handed over Ganga to them. As such Ganga's father believes that the right to marry him off should reside with his birth parents.Eventually Avinash and Radha write a letter to claim Ganga back when he turns 26 years old.
Ganga bids tearful farewell to his village and its inhabitants after Shiva tells Ganga the truth. His mother had to tell him that she only reared him in exchange for money. This breaks Ganga's heart, but without this shock, he would never have left. Ganga travels to the city of his birth parents. Ganga insists to bring Sannata along as he has nobody other than Ganga in his life.Ganga leaves without saying goodbye to Saavni.
Ganga finds that he has an elder brother Milind (Milind Gunaji), who is married to Supriya (Supriya Karnik), and younger sibling Monty, as well as his birth parents, Avinash and Radha, who are all very wealthy. Ganga struggles to cope up with the modern city lifestyle. Ganga has no table manners and has to be taught everything from scratch. He makes fun of the Supriya's cut hair and the lack of sleeves on her blouse. But Ganga refuses to call Radha as his mother and considers Laxmi as his only mother.Supriya dislikes him more as days pass by.Supriya decides to leave the house when she is embarrassed in front of her friends by Ganga, as he was learning to wear pants from Avinash (Avinash had given Ganga his own pants, so he was without one, while Ganga wore the pants the wrong way).
Ganga confronts Monty for smoking in the house. To take revenge Monty brings Ganga to college thinking that will embarrass him. But Ganga is a simpleton and wins the hearts of everyone at the college, including Tina (Rinke Khanna). Avinash throws a party to introduce Ganga to his friends, but his lack of city manners doesn't go down well with anyone, and Avinash has no option but to send Ganga back home. But Ganga regales the party with a song.
Tina brings Ganga to her college band and helps them win a music competition. Tina takes Ganga to her house; there he finds Milind spending time with another woman. Ganga confronts Milind at home, but he swears he is not cheating on Supriya, so Ganga backtracks.
Soon word spreads about Ganga being the latest eligible bachelor. He is asked to marry a socialite, Tina, as per his parents' wishes (even though Ganga says that he loves Saavni). Ganga agrees to everything his new-found family wants him to do as they say that they have already given their word to the bride's parents. At the engagement Saavni comes, but she tells Ganga that she is now engaged to Iqbal and is getting married next month. But Sannata knows the truth.
Things get bad for Ganga when Supriya hits Ganga in front of her friends for defending Radha. Ganga runs away from his biological parents' home and finds Milind being blackmailed by a woman (his mistress) and her brother who are asking for Rs 50 Lakhs for not revealing his infidelity. He saves his brother, but his best friend Sannata gets stabbed in the stomach by one of the goons who flees the scene. Ganga gets accused of stabbing his own friend & is jailed, and Supriya forbids the house from helping him in anyway. Milind also keeps his mouth shut, but later tells the truth to Supriya.
Ganga refuses to speak the truth about the incident at court as he does not want his family's reputation to be ruined. Supriya, who learns the truth from her husband, speaks out at court and proves his innocence. With a heavy heart Avinash and Radha let Ganga return to his village to his family.After the verdict, Ganga and his best friend return to their village where he reunites with Saavni. His parents agree to get them married. Before leaving town Ganga met Tina and told her that he is going back to the village. To keep his word, Tina breaks off the engagement with Ganga.
