Returning from falling in love in Europe, Jeff, a Southern Georgia boy gets a lesson about being true to the culture and family and how dreams can quickly be dashed.
Coming home to a tight knit, Southern family, Jeff Kovacs drives up in his pickup from his job at National Geographic where he works as a photographer. He's got some big news to tell once his sister and Pa get home from dance class.
During dinner Jeff reveals he has fallen in love with Petra, a girl from Hungary. The weight in the room becomes unbearable as the family tries to understand the ramifications of this move.
Jeff's brother Jeb tries his hardest to get Jeff to reconsider. He offers options for where he could live in town. He points out that Ma's really upset. He even tries the foreigner looking for a green card trope. Jeff insists that he has his wits about him.
Ma reveals the next morning that Jeff's girlfriend from last month, when he was home, is pregnant and everybody thinks its Jeff's. "Well, isn't it?"
Jeff leaves the house and is confronted again by Jeb riding his little sister's bike. Jeff and Jeb fight over Jeff's insistence to ask Sadie to get an abortion, while Jeb reminds him that "Southern Georgia is not very forgiving of these things."
Jeff, reluctantly calls Petra in Hungary. Jeff tells Petra he can't come. Petra is not happy with this and cuts him off cold.
The next morning, Jeff gets dressed and makes his way to Sadie's to ask for her hand. Sadie has bad news too. She lost the baby. When Jeff fumbles out a proposal "anyway", Sadie hits the ceiling and tells Jeff where he can shove it.
Having lost his Hungarian love, created serious concern for his mother and his brother's respect, and now his old girlfriend, Jeff is a broken man stuck alone between two cultures and continents.
