She soon joins an IT company and becomes well-settled in life. Things take a toll when the company she works for shuts down suddenly five months later. Just after the 2G spectrum scam expose, 17 Telecom companies have their licenses canceled by the courts. One of the companies is where Simran works. Simran Desai (Neha Sharma) loses her job and her company provided accommodation.
She faces financial hardship and is forced to move into a low-cost housing colony while searching for a new job. She has Abhimanyu / Jayanta Bhai (Vivek Oberoi) as her neighbor.Simran believes that Mumbai is the land of opportunity and if she fails to make it here, then the issue is with her and not with the city of Mumbai.
Jayanta Bhai works for Altaf Bhai (Zakir Husain) and aspires to be Altaf Bhai's "respected" right hand man. Simran discovers that Jayanta Bhai is a gangster who works for a don Altaf Bhai. His only aim in life is to own a bar of his own. He had just been released from prison after serving a five-year sentence for taking the blame for a crime he did not commit on the orders of the don. Jayanta did the deed on the promise that his status within the don's gang will be elevated once he is released, but the promise was reneged.Altaf still wants Jayanta to keep doing menial jobs for him. He says that it is not the right time to start a new business. Altaf says that he will deliver on his promise but doesn't say when.
Simran, on the other hand, is penniless and job hunting. Simran & Jayanta cross paths multiple times in various social (they go to the same cafe for breakfast) & private situations & slowly fall for each other. Simran gets a part time job at a mobile store where one man tries to steal a mobile phone on her shift. Jayanta helps her apprehend the thief and saves her job in the process.But then, Jayanta takes Simran's umbrella that was kept outside her apartment. It was raining heavily, and Simran had a job interview. Simran reached the interview soaking wet and is not taken seriously. She loses out on the job opportunity due to Jayanta's mistake.
Altaf's rival Alex (Nassar) is recently released from jail & he is keen to wrest the control of Mumbai back from Altaf. Alex is an ex-cop as well. Altaf cleverly manipulates Jayanta & sends him to do the dirty work of confronting Alex. Alex insults Jayanta for being the stooge of Altaf. Jayanta wants to kill Alex, but Altaf stops him and asks him to wait for the right time.
Though Simran is initially disdainful of Jayanta's roguish behavior, she gradually warms up to him after he takes her to a hospital all the way on his back when she overdoses on vitamin supplements and passes out in her room. Jayanta even spends Rs 1400 on Simran's treatment at the hospital. Realizing Jayanta's friendly, caring, and humorous nature despite his gangster background, she begins to develop romantic affections for him.When Simran is having trouble landing a job, Jayanta encourages her to visit corporate offices without an interview and apply for roles. This ends up working with Simran getting a promising lead. But the guy ends up asking Simran for sexual favors in exchange for the job. Simran refuses & cries in front of Jayanta, who ends up intervening & beating the crap out of the guy.
Simran & Jayanta fall in love & end up having sex with each other but are awkward the next morning. Jayanta sees Altaf paying protection money to Alex & is angry at the betrayal. He wants Altaf to stand up to Alex, but Altaf asks Jayanta to stand down.
Simran had told her parents that she still had a job as else they would have forced her to come back to their village and married her off. Now her dad visits Mumbai & finds out that Simran has been unemployed for months. To escape his wrath, Simran says that Jayanta is her boyfriend and is a manager in a big, reputed firm. Simran's dad asks her to bring Jayanta to her village so that the entire family can meet him. Simran prepares Jayanta & he aces the meeting with her dad. Simran's dad approves of their marriage.
Her father decides to fix their marriage but changes his mind after seeing Jayanta thrashing a man at a party, realizing that he is a rowdy. He bars Simran from returning to Mumbai, even forbidding her to attend an important job interview..Alex shuts down Altaf's bar by leveling allegations of selling fake liquor in them. Altaf blames Jayanta for the mess as Jayanta had roughed up Alex's goon & now Alex has said that he will not let Altaf open the bar till Jayanta apologizes to him. Jayanta refuses.
When Altaf puts him under pressure, Jayanta decides to break off all relations with him. After ensuring that Simran attends her interview, he goes & kills Alex to secure his own safety & of Simran. He manages to kill Alex but is fatally wounded in the process. Jayanta is stabbed with a re-bar and is left to bleed to death.
Six months later, Simran has become a director in her company and has moved out of the housing colony. She constantly thinks about Jayanta, whom she had never seen again after her interview. Simran yearns to show Jayanta her new life, knowing that he is the one person who will be happier than even herself in her having achieved her dreams. She soon finds Jayanta working at a petrol bunk, having survived his murder attempt and abandoned his rowdy past. The two embrace each other and reunite, starting a new life together.
