Each character represents what we are, "supposed to be" after college "Good Black Men in the community". Nathan is a single father, an actor, and is going through a horrible divorce, with his wife Vanessa. Nathan is battling depression, unemployment, weight issues, and raising his son. He is trying to balance being a full-time artist in St. Louis MO fatherhood. Nathan's friends Gabe, Marvin, and Keith are the only reason he is able to keep up the appearance of life. Although, he has these amazing friends, each one of them are holding their own secrets. Nathan's life behind closed doors is different from his persona'. From the outside looking it, it seems Nathan and his friends have it all together. It's Complicated utilizes dramatic Irony throughout the entire show. Nathan is the "Struggling Single Father"
