When Maya pays a surprise visit to Harry and Dahlia, friends she hasn't seen in a long time, her presence stirs up memories, dreams, and feelings of grief and hope that alter all of their lives.
Retired actor Harry and wife Dahlia are spending a quiet evening at their Philadelphia apartment on the eve of his 40th birthday, when a romantic interest from Harry's past, Maya, appears at their front door unannounced. Reluctant but polite, Dahlia welcomes her in and prepares dinner for the three. While becoming reacquainted, Maya, Dahlia and Harry unwillingly confront unresolved grief from their individual pasts at the dinner table. Harry abruptly exits following a pointed exchange with his wife over their deceased child, leaving Maya and Dahlia alone in the apartment. The women share a bottle of wine as sorrow pulls each into a dream-like atmosphere, punctuated by brief moments of reality where Dahlia grieves over the loss of her child, and Maya speculates why Harry chose Dahlia over herself. Harry's niece returns from checking on mentally unwell friend, revealing the friend had committed suicide before she was able to intervene. Dahlia and Maya debate God's plan for the dead girl, while elsewhere Harry confronts God over His plan for himself.
