Synopsis

In the town of Angel Falls, Winnie Carruthers, a teenager, is enjoying Christmas with her family when her father, David, is called away by Waters Industry CEO and business partner Henry Waters. With David accompanying him, Henry tries to convince longtime local Roger Evans to approve the demolition of his home in order to create space for a huge shopping center, but Roger declines, stating that he plans to give the house to his granddaughter, Cara, Winnie's closest friend. Later on, Roger is murdered in his house by a masked attacker known as "The Angel". That evening at a party, The Angel kills Cara and almost kills Winnie's brother Jimmy, but Winnie kills the murderer by electrocuting him. The Angel, who is actually Henry, is then revealed by her.

After a year, David has taken over as Waters Industry's CEO. While her family has moved on from the events of the past year, Winnie is still in mourning over Cara's passing. Before learning that her boyfriend Robbie has been cheating on her with her friend Darla for a year, she attends a Christmas party at his house and makes friends with Bernie, a social outcast. Distressed, Winnie walks by herself to a bridge and wishes she had never been born while gazing up at the aurora lights.

The town's power briefly cuts off and then comes back on, and the aurora abruptly vanishes. Following a brief pursuit by The Angel, Winnie finds out that Henry's younger brother Buck, the town's sheriff, does not recognize her. Henry, who is now the mayor of the town, then greets her. When Winnie visits her family, who likewise do not recognize her, she discovers that she has been taken to a different reality where she never existed. This implies that The Angel is still alive and has already murdered Jimmy and a number of other people since the previous year.

Despite her mild skepticism, Winnie, upset, goes to Robbie's Christmas party and meets Bernie, who explains her predicament to her. Following their narrow escape, Bernie and Winnie conclude that The Angel has been preying on the adolescent children of homeowners whose homes Henry was interested in purchasing. Winnie successfully persuades her aunt Gale of her predicament after deciding she needs her father's assistance to stop Henry and murder him once more.

When Winnie tries to persuade her father that Henry killed Jimmy, David rejects her arguments and orders her to leave. Winnie sees her mother being killed by the murderer as she is leaving. The Angel is knocked unconscious after attempting to attack Winnie, Bernie, and Gale. When Winnie removes the murderer's mask, she is startled to see David hiding behind it. After David comes to, the three of them run away. David is lured to the movie theater where Bernie works, where he is killed by Winnie, Bernie, and Gale.

Under the aurora lights, Winnie and Bernie make their way back to the bridge, where Bernie discloses that Winnie saved her from suicide. Even though Winnie wishes she had been born, nothing comes of it. She understands that before Winnie can go back to her original time line, Henry must die again because he still poses a threat to the town in his capacity as mayor. Winnie and Bernie discover that Henry is hosting a rally at which everyone seems to be in a trance. He is confronted by the two, who blame him for the deaths that occurred in the previous year. By confirming that he killed Jimmy, Henry broke David's spirit and subjugated him, thereby making him his accomplice. Bernie kills Henry by stabbing him after he attacks Winnie, ending Henry's authority over the villagers. Winnie and Bernie share a kiss as the aurora returns.

Winnie awakens on Christmas morning in her bedroom. She welcomes her family with joy, and her parents express regret for preventing her from processing her trauma. After that, Winnie dashes to Bernie's house, but Bernie tells her that she still remembers their time together in the alternate reality. They embrace and decide to spend Christmas together.
