In spring 2011, director Stig Björkman meets Ingrid Bergman's daughter Isabella Rossellini and she suggests him to "make a film about Mama". Through Isabella, Stig is able to tell Ingrid's story through her own words and images. Through never-before-seen private footage, notes, letters, diaries and interviews with her children, this documentary presents a personal portrait and captivating look behind the scenes of the remarkable life of a young Swedish girl who became one of the most celebrated actresses of American and World cinema.

A profile of Ingrid Bergman is presented through a combination of archive footage and present day interviews with among others all four of her children, who focus their comments on their relationship with her especially in light of she largely being an absentee mother in focusing more on her career as an actor. The intimacy of the portrait is punctuated by much of that archive footage being home movies either of or taken by Bergman, often with a background of passages being read from her journal or of personal correspondence to who were her closest friends and confidantes.—Huggo
