A fictional character, Stefan, is tired of waiting to be published by his creator. A book in which he was to be a major protagonist was never published. Thus, Stefan decides to take his fate into his own hands and publishes himself.
Stefan is caught up in a carrier to whom he was allocated by his creator. His life within his carrier is fragmented. He only exists during intervals in which the carrier's consciousness is failing. Dissatisfied with his situation Stefan tries to take over control of his carrier. He also tries to mobilize fictional characters like him to start a movement celebrating creative intelligence. As his attempts to take over control of his carrier fail, Stefan positions himself as the vanguard of a radical movement to redefine art, and as a result also history.
The carrier to whom Stefan is assigned is unaware of the fictional character, although he is aware of living parallel lives due to episodes of failing consciousness. The carrier is an artist who suffers from trauma but it is unclear how far trauma is linked to his parallel lives. The carrier sketches and draws out of necessity. He then loses this necessity to create and reflects on the changes he is going through.
The relationship between Stefan and his carrier radically changes when the carrier finds love with Beata. This love enables the carrier to live a new life, beyond creation. It provides him with a new sense of necessity, not to create but to ethically take care of another person, and through that other person for himself.
