Synopsis

I Dream of Jeannie was a story where an astronaut Tony Nelson finds a beautiful, 2000 year old blond genie in a bottle after a flight on a deserted beach next to the ocean. Jeannie (Barbara Eden) as she is named turns out to be very innocent in demeanor and is dedicated to her new master.

The only other character in the cast of the show who knows about the Genie Nelson found is Roger Healey (Bill Daily), Tony's best friend astronaut. NASA psychiatrist Dr. Alfred Bellows (Hayden Rorke) when he just cannot get a handle on the unexplained events that happen with Major Nelson.

I Dream of Jeannie wasn't recognized as a huge hit for the five years it aired, hitting the Nielsen's Top 30 ratings only twice. It was found major success when it went into syndication and the popularity grew in re-runs.

The bottle where Jeannie resides came from an old Jim Bean liquor decanter, "Beam's Choice" Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. The art department decorated and painted the outside of decanter to make the genie bottle look elegant. The interior of Jeannie's bottle was a sound stage.

NBC brought I Dream of Jeannie to the small screen in what they felt was an answer to competing for viewer that were fans of ABC's series Bewitched, and right away there was a rivalry between the two magical shows. At first Sidney Sheldon, producer and creator did not want Jeannie to be blond due to the similarity to Bewitched's main character Samantha Stephens played by Elizabeth Montgomery.

The first season had 30 episodes in black and white with the remaining 109 episodes in color. The show was written, produced and created by Sidney Sheldon. The show first show was in December 1964 with the final episode in January 1970.Martin Snytsheuvel
