Set in 19. Century in Jutland, Denmark, where a young man is not allowed to marry Cecil, the daughter of the woolen stocking manufacturer. He travels to Holsten to earn money. In the meantime, the absence of her lover has had a bad influence on Cecils mental health, which results in a horrible climax, when the young man returns from Germany.
