The homeless man befriends the family only to find out that the man is his long lost son. The son believes that his dad ran out before he was born however the opposite is true. Elmer is a homeless man who watches out for some fellow transients. He is sitting on a park bench when Amanda Spencer, a little girl, approaches him to visit. He reminds her that it is not wise to visit with strangers when you are so young. Later, spying a car parked in an isolated spot with an expensive mobile phone visible, is too much to resist. But he is caught in the act by the owner, Reg Spencer, an insurance company accountant. Reg gives chase but loses him in traffic when a car blocks his path at a critical moment. Elmer sells the phone for $125 and uses the proceeds to help his homeless friends. At home, Reg's journalist wife Barb is working on a story about how the homeless cope with Christmas. Amanda tells her about Elmer thinking he might help with her story. Barb is not able to convince him to provide a story. Several days later during a shopping trip, Reg catches sight of Elmer in a department store. This time he catches him. Barb and Amanda recognize Elmer and are able to convince Reg that he should not call the police. Instead, they suggest that he come home with them and work off the value of the stolen phone by helping them with chores around the house. This is perfect for Amanda as she has coveted having a grandfather to play with her. One day, as Elmer is near the fireplace, he notices a framed photo of a young woman. It is identical to the small one he has carried for years of the woman he loved. Reg indicates that it is a picture of his mother. When asked about his father, Reg says he hates his dad who left her to raise him by herself. Just the opposite is true, but it takes some doing to get the truth out.—Garon Smith
