Synopsis

Set in 1983, the story begins with a man winning a fighting competition at a club. He is called as 'Himmatwala' meaning courageous man.The man then goes to village called Ramnagar which is rule by a tyrant Zamindar (landlord) called Sher Singh. There he meets his mother, Savitri (Zarina Wahab) and younger sister, Padma (Leena Jumani) who are living a miserable life in a little hut outside of the village. We also come to know his name is Ravi (Ajay Devgan). The mother and daughter don't even have enough money to buy daily rice or wheat rations.

Due to Sher Singh young men only leave the village for opportunities in the city, Ravi is the only one to ever return. Due to Sher Singh, there are no schools or hospitals in the village. Sher Singh terrorizes the village to an extent that he has always been elected unopposed to the post of the Sarpanch of the village. The villagers fear Sher Singh as all of their land is mortgaged with him.

Ravi's mother tells him that his father Dharamurthy (Anil Dhawan) was an honest and respected man and was the priest of the temple. His father was framed by Sher Singh (Mahesh Manjrekar) for robbing the temple since the latter saw him commit a murder. Dharamurthy never got the opportunity to reveal Sher Singh's murder to the villagers as they were now all turned against him.Disgusted, Ravi's father commits suicide. In revenge, a very young Ravi tries to kill Sher Singh by entering his room at night with an ax but is unsuccessful when he misses with his aim and Sher Singh survives. Ravi's house is burned down. Savitri tells Ravi to run away as Sher Singh will kill him. And Ravi ran away to the city but has now returned.

Ravi on hearing this story swears revenge. Savitri asks Ravi not to kill Sher Singh, but to torture him enough so that he admits to Dharamurthy's innocence from his own mouth. Ravi beats up Narayan Das (Paresh Rawal), Sher Singh's manager and brother-in-law. He then threatens Sher Singh saying that he is a CBI officer who has been sent to investigate the land grabbing scam being run by Sher Singh. Ravi gets the legal documents of his own house from Sher Singh.

The next day, Sher Singh's daughter, Rekha (Tamannah) was beating up her innocent driver. The driver was supposed to pick up Rekha from the railway station, and he didn't arrive as he was busy in the marriage of his daughter. Narayan Das came to the station instead, but this meant that Rekha had to wait for 10 minutes.Ravi was attending the same wedding and witnesses this. He proceeds to publicly humiliate Rekha.

On Narayan Das's advice, Sher Singh tries to bribe Ravi only to be shocked on knowing that he is not a CBI officer and that he is Savitri's son.

Rekha decides to take her revenge and unleashes a Tiger on the village in front of Ravi. While enjoying the Tiger attacking the villagers, Rekha falls down from the terrace and is about to be attacked by the animal, when Ravi jumps and saves her life. He also beats up the tiger. Rekha falls in love with Ravi. Rekha then saves Ravi's life from the henchmen the father sent to kill Ravi.

Ravi now comes to know that Padma is in love with Shakti (Adhyayan Suman), Narayan Das's son. He has his objections and so has Narayan Das. However, Sher Singh tells Narayan Das that marrying Shakti with Padma would give them an upper hand over Ravi as they can ill-treat Padma and keep Ravi in control. There Padma comes to know that Ravi is not her real brother from her father's close friend.

On confronting him, Ravi tells her that he and the real Ravi (Ritesh Deshmukh) were very close friends and one day in Mumbai, the real Ravi bumped into his father's friend. On hearing that his mother and sister are alive (he thought they had died in the fire), he is delighted but unfortunately moments later dies in a road accident. Before dying, the real Ravi asks Ravi to take care of them. Padma initially is upset but then reconciles after Ravi saves her life from some goons. Ravi then gets Padma and Shakti married after Shakti pleads to him.

However, after marriage both father and son start ill-treating Padma at Sher Singh's behest to force Ravi to withdraw from the Sarpanch elections. Ravi is furious but is helpless. Rekha on hearing this advises Ravi to use her against her own father. Ravi thanks her and tells her that he is not the real Ravi. Now, Rekha playing a new game, tells her father that she is pregnant, and that Ravi is the father of her unborn child. Now, Sher Singh is helpless and begs to Ravi to marry her daughter. Ravi then uses Sher Singh and teaches Narayan Das and Shakti a lesson by making them do all the household work. He then wins the Sarpanch election by ensuring that Sher Singh doesn't contest and finally gives all the property documents back to the villagers which Sher Singh had illegally taken from them.

Shakti overhears Rekha and Ravi's conversation that she is not pregnant, and he is not the real Ravi. Angered, Sher Singh, Narayan Das and Shakti bring 20 fighters from the city to kill Ravi.Sher Singh tells Savitri and the villagers that the real Ravi is dead, and Ravi is an impostor. But Savitri says that she has no issues and that now Ravi is her son. Ravi then fights with all the fighters. However, when they all join up and beat him, the Tiger (which Ravi had fought with) comes and saves his life. Ravi and the Tiger attack the rest and are successful in beating the rest.

Ravi then beats Sher Singh and Shakti. He is about to kill Sher Singh when Savitri stops him.In the end, Sher Singh, Narayan Das and Shakti ask for their forgiveness from Ravi, Savitri and all the villagers.
