At the beginning of the early modern period, tens of thousands of alleged witches were burned at the stake in Europe. The fires burned particularly brightly in Germany. Catholic Bamberg was a center of witch hunts. Under Prince Bishop Fuchs von Dornheim, almost the entire city council was accused of witchcraft and executed.
