Summaries

The village of Schabbach experiences the shifting fortunes of Germany from 1919 to 1982.

The series (11 episodes) tells the story of the village Schabbach, on the Hunsrueck in Germany through the years 1919-1982. Central person is Maria, who we see growing from a 17 year old girl to an old woman, and her family. The family, like the rest of the German people live through the crises after WW-I, the rise and fall of Nazism and WW-II, and the rebuilding and the following prosperity of the village (as a symbol for the whole country) after WW II.—Roemer Lievaart <[email protected]>

Heimat is the story of Maria Simon's family (born in 1900 and thus always as old as the century) set in the fictional Hunsrück village of Schabbach in the period from 1919 to 1982. Heimat is a German chronicle. The film tells of the path to fascism, the Nazi era, reconstruction and the economic miracle with its late consequences. It is a film about love and death, about remembering and forgetting. Heimat is the story of those who always remain losers and of the others who - like the Katz or Lucie - always fall on their feet.
