After the sudden death of her father in a car accident, right before her birthday, 16-year-old MEGAN's world falls apart. Vowing never to celebrate again, she plunges into anger and despair. Her mother CAROL's life and their family finances are a shambles.
In the months after her father's funeral, Megan grows increasingly moody and hostile. It isn't until she visits her GRANDPA during summer vacation that things improve. It all starts when he makes arrangements for Megan to work at his friend JACK's horse ranch, just like her father did when he was her age. Megan struggles to prove herself to Jacks 16 year old nephew, TYLER, who works at the ranch and discovers that she has a natural gift with horses! She is the only person who can work with SUNNY, a temperamental ex-racehorse who has been brought to Jacks ranch to be rehabilitated to go back to its owner's obnoxious daughter to ride or if it can't be rehabilitated, to be sent to the slaughterhouse.
As the year goes by, Megan continues working at the ranch part time while at school, developing a strong bond with Sunny and in the process learning more about herself. Carol starts to heal as she develops a friendship with Jack.
As Megan gets closer to the horse, an internal conflict develops for Megan: if she succeeds in saving the horse, Sunny will go to the owner's obnoxious daughter. If not, off to the slaughterhouse. As the next summer comes around, despite Megan's success with Sunny, the owner is not satisfied and decides to give up on Sunny. That night, a violent thunderstorm erupts and the night before he is to be shipped out, Sunny escapes from the stables.
Despite a frantic search in the storm, Megan, Tyler and Jack fail to find the horse. Megan is convinced Sunny is lost for good and prays for help. The next morning, Megan discovers Sunny in her backyard. Sunny found her!
She returns Sunny to the ranch, still vowing to win somehow. But even though she's saved up some money, it's not enough. Sunny has to go.
When Tyler and Jack drive Megan home at the end of the day, she fears that she will never see Sunny again. Arriving at home, Megan is shocked and angered to find the house decorated for her birthday. She is even more shocked when her mother gives her a present: a certificate of ownership for Sunny. Mom, Grandpa, and Jack have all chipped in and Sunny is now officially Megan's horse!
Through the story, Carol develops a closeness to Jack and begins to recover from the loss of her husband and learns to love again. Megan rediscovers the joy of life and realizes that her father's spirit will always be with her.
