An army officer's wife is unsure if the man she is living with is her husband or his look-alike.
Indian Army Officer, Kamal (Shashi Kapoor), and Archana (Babita) get married but shortly thereafter he is called to the front as war has broken out. Once there, he meets with Rakesh - his look-alike - who plans to kill Kamal and take his place, but Kamal resists and emerges as the winner. To escape prosecution/court martial, he runs from the front and returns home. Army personnel think Rakesh has become a deserter and also think that Kamal is missing in action and believed dead. Archana (Babita) moves to the city of Delhi along with her widowed father. Archana was sent to Switzerland for her studies, but did not like it there. Hence, she relocated back to India and her father got her admission to a Delhi University.Archana's lives with her father Mahavir (Niranjan Sharma) and driver Ghasitaram Aashiq (Johnny Walker). Rakesh is the son of Mahavir's good friend Randhir (Hari Shivdasani). Mahavir and Randhir are meeting after 10 years. Randhir thinks Rakesh is a studious boy, but Rakesh is a flirt and a skirt chaser.
In college, Archana meets Rakesh (Shashi Kapoor), who always teases her. He pursues her, writes love letters and serenades her publicly. Rakesh has a whistling habit. Archana wants to complain about him to the principal (Sapru). Archana does not the name of her tormentor or which year he is in, so the Principal sends a peon with Archana so she can identify the person to the peon. By mistake Archana points out Kamal (Shashi Kapoor) to the peon who looks exactly like Rakesh and studies at the same college. Kamal was an orphan and is a very decent fellow. Due to Archana's complaint, Kamal is suspended from college for a week and is humiliated in front of the students.
Later, Archana realizes her mistake (when she sees Kamal and Rakesh together). Archana apologizes to Kamal and invites her home for tea. Archana is attracted to Kamal. Kamal and Archana grow close. Archana still confuses between Rakesh and Kamal and is embarrassed on multiple occasions. Archana asks Kamal to wear black mole on his chin to help her differentiate between the 2.Both Rakesh and Kamal are part of the National Cadet Corps.
Meanwhile Ghasitaram romances Laali (Ameeta), who is also Archana's maid, but is chased away by Laali's dad (Yunus Parvez). Eventually love triumphs and Laali's father agrees to marry them.
Rakesh wants to marry Archana and always tries to come between Kamal and Archana.Rakesh impersonates Kamal to spend time with Archana, and fools Archana by donning the mole on his chin that Archana had asked Kamal to wear to help her identify him.Kamal and Archana pass their exams in first class. Archana is going with her dad to Dehradun and promises that she will talk to her father about their marriage.
Rakesh's truth is revealed when Randhir and Mahavir discuss marriage proposal of Rakesh with Archana. Rakesh and his father Randhir come to meet Archana before she leaves for Dehradun. Archana knows that she has the upper hand as Rakesh begs her not to say anything to Randhir about his college deeds. Archana mistreats Rakesh in all possible ways including throwing food at his head. Meanwhile, Mahavir promises Randhir to marry Rakesh to Archana and leaves for Dehradun with his daughter.When she finds out, Archana is livid and reveals the truth about Rakesh's character. Rakesh is very angry at his insult.
Mahavir has promised Archana to Randhir, but Archana flatly refuses to marry a skirt-chaser and a flirt. As Mahavir is adamant, Archana says she won't marry Kamal, but she won't marry Rakesh either. Eventually Mahavir relents and agrees to Archana's wish. At last, Archana takes her father's consent to marry Kamal.
Rakesh wants to kidnap Kamal and impersonate him to marry Archana. But his henchmen kidnap him thinking that he is Kamal. Archana and Kamal marry and enjoy their honeymoon at her father's estate. Archana learns that Kamal is ambidextrous.Soon war breaks out and Kamal has to leave for the front. To his surprise, Rakesh has also enrolled in the army in the same battalion. One day, when they both are alone, Rakesh starts fighting with Kamal (& announces his plan to kill Kamal and impersonate him in Archana's life) and it carries on till one of them disappears underwater.
Later, the remaining one comes to Archana's estate, and they live together for some time. One day Kamal's superior comes to report the death of Kamal. Archana gets confused as her husband has been with her all the time. But his superior tells her that he could recognize Kamal anywhere and says Kamal is dead. Not sure of the identity of the man who is staying with her, she puts him to some tests.Covering a hill in 20 mins on horseback, which he did earlier, sing a song for her that he sang earlier, Play TT left-handed and concludes that he is not Kamal.Kamal claims that the horse started eating grass and hence he was delayed. Kamal was traumatized by the images of war and can't remember the song. Kamal picks up the TT in his right hand.
Kamal says that he is Kamal, and he came back because of the fear that he had killed Rakesh. Now he is sure that he didn't kill Rakesh as he had died in a battlefield. But no one believes him, and he gets arrested.
He is about to be sentenced to ten years of jail for cheating and sexual assault (Randhir also testifies against him, including Archana, Ghasitaram and Laali's dad), when the real Rakesh (half face disfigured) appears and testifies that he is the real Rakesh. Rakesh admits that when he came out of the pond, he thought he killed Kamal. But then decided to take Kamal's place in the army and serve as a soldier. He fore-sake all of his usual habits and impersonated Kamal perfectly.
Rakesh was injured in the war with the Chinese and was rescued by Tibetans. He was headed back to his military camp, when he saw the newspaper article on the case between Archana and Kamal. Rakesh wants to take advantage of this and re-enter Archana's life as Kamal, after the real Kamal is sent to jail. But his father's and Archana's testimony changed his thinking, and he regards Archana as his sister, and thus decided to tell the truth.
Everything is settled, Kamal and Archana happily reconcile and forgive Rakesh for his previous misdoings. Kamal later tells Archana that he failed in her tests to prove himself as Kamal because he lived in constant fear of having killed Rakesh.
