Joseph goes off to sea for ten months, leaving his new bride, Maria, to live with his mother, Agnes, in her small one bedroom flat. Maria is a lonely orphan who has an affair that causes her to lose her job in a shipyard, and leaves her pregnant. The mother and daughter-in-law barely put up with each other, and are apprehensive about the return of Joseph.—Will Gilbert
