While traveling by train from Denver to Washington, DC, wealthy young Grenfall Lorry meets a beautiful young girl. When they are accidentally left behind in a mining town, they race through the mountains and finally catch it. They travel to Washington and have a great time, but they soon part. They meet again later in the small European country of Graustark, where Grenfall and his friend Harry rescue her from kidnappers, and they then discover that she is actually the country's Princess Yetiva. She is engaged to Prinze Lorenz of Asphan in order to pay off Graustark's enormous debt from the war, but Lorenz is murdered and Grenfall is framed for the crime. Grenfall Lorry, a wealthy young American, meets a charming girl on an express train en route to Washington, and aids her to overtake the train by a thrilling coach ride through the mountains, when they are left behind at a small mining town. Lorry learns her name is Guggenslocker. He follows her to Edelweiss in Graustark, her home. On the way he meets an old college friend, Barry Anguish, make and they the journey together. Lorry meets Miss Guggenslocker on the street and obtains a faint smile of recognition. That night he and Anguish overhear a plot to abduct the Princess Yetive. Lorry and Anguish approach the castle by stealth and Lorry is amazed to find Miss Guggenslocker is Her Royal Highness, Princess Yetive of Graustark. He saves her from the ruffians. Lorry learns that Yetive faces a serious crisis. Two suitors clamor for her hand, Prince Lorenz of Asphain, and Gabriel, Prince of Dawsbergen. Graustark must pay an enormous war indemnity to Asphain. Marriage to Lorenz grants Yetive an extension of time to meet the payment. Failure to do so means the signing away of almost her entire principality. Lorry's great love for the girl determines him to save her. He and Anguish are certain that Prince Gabriel was the man who plotted to abduct Yetive Because of his rank, they dare not accuse him. In despair Yetive promises to wed Lorenz. That night the prince, intoxicated, insults Yetive and is knocked down by Lorry. A duel is arranged but Lorenz is found slain in his bed. Lorry is accused of the murder and is imprisoned. Yetive aids him to escape. Prince Bolaroz, father of the slain prince, arrives in Edelweiss, and offers Yetive an extension of time for paying the debt if Lorry is captured and executed. The persistent Gabriel presses his offer of marriage. Yetive orders him from the castle. That night Lorry escapes from the monastery, gains entrance to the castle and surprises Yetive in her boudoir. He swears he will give himself up for execution, and save her kingdom. Next morning, in the throne room, Gabriel accuses Yetive of concealing Lorry, but is frustrated by Lorry bursting in and offering his life for the Princess. Yetive declares her love for Lorry and begs Bolaroz for mercy. Bolaroz angrily refuses and demands Lorry's death Anguish suddenly confronts Gabriel and accuses him of Lorenz's murder. Gabriel confesses. Bolaroz then makes an alliance with Graustark. Lorry weds the princess and is crowned.—Moving Picture World synopsis
