After falling to his death, a misogynistic ad executive comes back as a woman.
Charlie Sorrell is a manipulative, misogynistic, womanizing advertising executive in New York City who writes television commercials. He disappears one weekend while hang gliding. While witness accounts say his glider crashed into a river, his body is never found. Charlie's co-workers celebrate his demise and his old nemesis Ray is promoted to the job Charlie once had.
Charlie's best friend - and only friend - George, soon after finds a mysterious woman on his doorstep dressed in only a borrowed overcoat and who appears to be suffering from amnesia. After some hesitation, he lets her spend the night, only to be awakened suddenly with a scream as the woman claims to be Charlie. George refuses to believe her story until she confronts him with a series of events that only George would know - including a new one - sleeping with George's then-girlfriend. Now convinced, George agrees to help Charlie adjust to his new existence as "Charlene". George buys her a new outfit and tries to get her back in at the agency.
George arranges for Charlene to be interviewed as Ray's new secretary and is hired on the spot. Charlene later that evening balks at having to be subordinate to Ray and tells George she'll find a husband to take care of her instead, with the intent to divorce him later and collect alimony. Fed up, George orders her out of his apartment, calls her a user and says that her experience did nothing to change who she is and that she will always be a user. Devastated, a weeping Charlene promises to do better and George allows her to stay.
