Police investigate a murder that occurred in a burlesque theater.
Bill Martin, a reporter falsely accused of murder, takes refuge at a traveling carnival. His girlfriend Janet is forced to hide out with him as the "new fish" in the chorus line of carnival strippers, and becomes the de facto "Girl On The Run."—[email protected]
Newspaper reporter Bill Martin has been sent to the traveling carnival that is in town, hoping he can uncover illegal activities associated with it. While he is on assignment, his boss is murdered. Martin is framed for the murder, so the police are trying to find him. Accompanying him at the carnival is his girlfriend Janet, who worked at the newspaper front desk; the police also seek her, figuring that Martin will not be far from her. Martin decides to go for evidence that will prove his innocence. In his absence, he has Janet introduce herself to Lil, the matron who manages the girls of the burlesque sideshow. Lil is mad at political boss Clay Reeves and is willing to take Janet into protection. The carnival boss, Ross, is asked by Reeves to be on the lookout for the pair. As Martin tries to leave the carnival, the police nearly nab him. He ducks into a tent and manages to get himself into a side show attraction where a carnival visitor can try to survive three rounds with the carny's boxer. Martin, who had some boxing experience in college, manages to carry off the feat while evading discovery. The show director is pleased with his performance and hires him to be a shill that can provide a good show if no other volunteer steps forward. Reeves detects Janet's masquerade when there is an extra girl in Lil's revue. He locks her in the dressing room and waits for Martin to contact her. He manages to bean Martin with a 2"-by-4" and goes for the police. But Lil saves the day. She has the goods on Reeves and his frame-up of Martin. Carny boss Blake also tries to pinch Reeves.—Garon Smith
