An orchestra conductor becomes acquainted with a woman who promises to break up with her boyfriend when he returns from military service. However, when her boyfriend returns blinded in an accident, she finds she cannot end the relationship out of a sense of pity and guilt. The conductor volunteers to donate one of his eyes for transplant surgery so the veteran can regain his sight, and then he goes abroad, leaving them forever.—Anonymous
