A former officer, condemned to execution for murder, is saved and "resurrected" to become a secret investigator and dispenser of justice.
Koyama Genjuro was an officer condemned to death for killing a colleague who had raped Genjuro's wife Orie, who then committed suicide. However, just before his execution was to take place, he was saved and his execution faked with another condemned prisoner taking his place. Now, with no identity, he has been "resurrected" to become a living ghost ...Shinigami ("The God of Death"). Aided by a former thief and the widow of the man he killed and with the backing of the former Shogunate Chief Councillor (the man behind and responsible for his "resurrection"), Genjuro "haunts" the streets of Edo, investigating crimes against the people of Edo and executing the corrupt officials committing them.—Tony-Scheinman
