A nobleman marries a gypsy woman, but while at court he falls in love with a princess.

In 18th-century Austria. Prince Christian (nicknamed General Crack) is an aristocratic mercenary, son of a nobleman from as morganatic marriage with a gypsy woman. He offers his military services to Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor (1747-1792, reigned 1790-1792)., but wants in exchange a marriage to one of the emperor's sisters and a fortune in gold as her dowry. Before the deal is complete, Christian impulsively marries the gypsy dancer Fidelia. He is then introduced to his prospective bride Archduchess Maria Luisa, falls in love with her, and becomes trapped between the two women in his life.—Dimos I
