The frequency of freaks tears apart theatrical mechanisms of control, urban anarchism, and the society of the spectacle. A dérive is a freak. And this is FreaQuency.

A meditative, anti-war, hybrid experimental documentary feature deconstructing theater, urban anarchism, and the society of the spectacle, with texts by Guy Debord, Bertolt Brecht, Albert Camus, Rainer Maria Rilke, Mooji, Lao Tzu, and others. The footage includes unclear, unused, and abandoned elements of site-specific performances and art interventions created by the international theater group Freaquency under the anarchist direction of Irena Curik. The film's aesthetic is based on imperfection, excess and human failure, revealing vulnerable humanity behind the camera. A deeply personal and reflective film that no AI could ever have made. Freaquency questions work and repetition, discusses social control and free will, and represents a nine-year cycle of Dérive Lifestyle (2013-2022). A dérive is a freak of urban society, hence the frequency of freaks. The film was completed five years after the last public show and is a prophetic reference to the world events that followed.—Irena Curik
