Synopsis

ACP Yashvardhan IPS (John Abraham) a.k.a. Yash, is in the hospital, recalling the accident that changed his life forever. Yash was shot and thrown off a cliff, but he managed to get his hands on the rock face and climb back up the cliff before being rescued by his fellow officers.Yash is a dutiful, responsible and tough police officer in the Narcotics Control Bureau whose only passion in life is crime-fighting. He has no family or loved ones and has been alone in life since he can remember.

Everything changes when Yash meets Maya (Genelia D'Souza), an independent and lovely woman. Though the two get off to a rocky start as Maya believes Yash is a goon when she sees him thrashing drug peddlers in the city. Yash was working undercover, with his cover as a drug supplier looking to offload 40 Kgs of drugs into the city. Yash is introduced to several distributors, and he wants to cultivate his informant network to get to the people who control the entire supply and distribution network. Mahesh Singh Rajput (Raj Babbar) IRS; Zonal director of NCB, Mumbai is Yash's boss.

Maya warms up to him once she realizes he is a police officer (Maya's car is stopped at a police checkpoint and Yash arrives to help her out) and apologizes for the misunderstandings they had. Yash was chasing a prominent drug supplier named Cheema and is contacted by an informant named Arvind.

One day, Maya gets hit by a car in front of Yash. Yash rushes her to the hospital. With that, the two bond and start to meet and go out regularly.Maya confesses her love to Yash, but Yash refutes her advances, as he does not want her to become his weakness in his professional life. Maya has a cottage by the cliff that was built by her father. However, Swati (Sandhya Mridul), the wife of Yash's coworker and good friend Atul (Mohnish Bahl), convinces Yash that he is in love with Maya as well and Yash decides to get married to her.

Yash is working with an informant Arvind (Shashank Shende), who provides a lot of accurate information on production and distribution of drugs in India. Arvind promises Yash to help confiscate 2 Lakh Kgs of drugs in Mumbai. Yash works with Rajput to assemble his team: Atil, Mahesh Pande and Kamlesh. Arvind says that 4 gangs control the entire drugs trade in Mumbai and gives information on where the drugs are manufactured, packaged and prepared to be transported into the city.

With his information NCB is able to eliminate quite a few targets. But NCB is worried that the informant had no known drug links and are perplexed how a non-drug businessperson has so much accurate information about the drug trade. Turns out the informant is working for a known drug supplier Reddy (Mukesh Rishi), who is using the informant to eliminate rival gangs via NCB.

Reddy calls his younger brother Vishnu (Vidyut Jammwal) to take charge of the drugs business. Vishnu returns from Africa, and promptly eliminates Arvind as he believes that if Arvind could use NCB to eliminate rivals, then Arvind could one day eliminate Reddy and Vishnu as well.

With the competition eliminated, Reddy and Vishnu get active and start supplying drugs in Mumbai. Slowly the NCB picks the trail and understands that Reddy is the real owner of the new drug mafia in Mumbai. They set up a trap where the NCB officers lie in wait while Reddy conducts a drug deal.

In the big drug case the unit is investigating, Yash, along with officers from the Narcotics Control Bureau, DSP Mahesh Pande (Ameet M Gaur) who is transferred on special duty from the New Delhi Income Tax Department, DSP Atul Kalsekar and Inspector Kamlesh, kills Reddy while he is peddling drugs. Yash, Mahesh & Kamlesh are suspended for killing Reddy instead of arresting him.

Reddy's heartless and aggressive brother Vishnu (Vidyut Jamwal) vows to avenge his brother's death by killing all of the officers. Vishnu brutally murders the entire family of the person Tahir who squealed on Reddy, that led to his death. Tahir was a furniture manufacturer who was using his business to export drugs to Belgium and Canada hidden under his woodwork. Vishnu declares his intentions to Yash.Yash and the other officers prepare themselves for Vishnu and lay a trap for him. They are successful when Vishnu is lured into attacking Yash's house. Yash almost arrests Vishnu, but he escapes.

Later Vishnu successfully breaks into Mahesh's home and brutally murders him after sexually assaulting his wife Rachana (Anaitha Nair). The event leaves Yash and the other officers shaken but Yash and Maya's marriage take place.Meanwhile, Vishnu decides to attack each of the officers' weaknesses; he kidnaps Swati, Atul's wife, and Atul is forced to tell him where Yash will be that night. Yash and Maya consummate their marriage; however, this proves to be their first and last night together.

Yash is shot (and thrown off the cliff, which landed him in the hospital) and Maya is kidnapped in the attack. Yash miraculously survives the attack. Vishnu tells Atul that he will release Swati if Atul kills Yash. However, Atul cannot bring himself to kill his friend and instead joins forces with Yash to execute a plan against Vishnu and save Maya and Swati.

Yash, Atul and Kamlesh all go to the place where Vishnu has been keeping Maya and Swati hostage and find, in horror, that Swati has been murdered. In despair and heartbreak, Atul kills himself after seeing Swati's body. Yash and Kamlesh go together and face Vishnu in a final confrontation. Kamlesh is shot but survives. Vishnu shoots Maya in front of Yash and drops her from the second floor. Yash catches her but is unable to save her. Maya assures Yash that she has gotten her wish of being with him and dies in Yash's arms. Anger and sorrow build up in Yash and he brutally finishes off Vishnu, exacting his revenge.

At the end, Yash is shown living alone again, having returned to his professional life. Kamlesh calls Yash and tells him that he has found a new informer. Yash turns to Maya's photo before leaving and says that he'll be coming home late.
