A Japanese man falls in love with the daughter of his American employer.

Orphaned Mildred Thornton is left in the care of her father's trusted Japanese-American business partner, Sato. Although Mildred feels the deepest friendship towards Sato, she does not return the love he feels for her, preferring instead Harry Maxwell, the young ambassador to Mexico. During his stay at the embassy, Harry is coerced into a hasty marriage by adventuress Benita Ramirez. After discovering his wife's true nature, Harry returns home and realizes that he actually loves Mildred, but the vengeful Benita follows him across the border. Resigned to the fact that he can never have Mildred, and knowing that Benita stands in the way of her happiness, Sato invites the adventuress on a boating trip. In mid-ocean, Sato sinks the boat, killing both himself and Benita, freeing Harry to marry Mildred.
