Cole Turner, a popular internet celebrity with millions of followers on his YouTube channel Escape From Reality, is known for his obsession with capturing every moment through photos and videos. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of his channel, Cole travels to Moscow with his girlfriend Erin and his friends Dash, Samantha, and Thomas. Dash arranges for them to partake in an extreme escape room experience with the help of Alexei Koslov, a wealthy Russian fan of Cole's.
In Moscow, the group meets Alexei and his girlfriend Viktoria. After a night out at a shady club where they encounter harassment from Russian mobsters, they retreat to Alexei's luxurious mansion. On the day of the escape room, Alexei connects Cole's phone to the venue's surveillance system, streaming the event live to Cole's massive audience. Alexei warns the group that the escape room will be intense and unpredictable. Blindfolded, they are led to their starting positions.
Cole begins alone in a dark room with a dead Russian soldier and a table of surgical tools. He is forced to cut open the body, retrieving a key from the corpse's stomach. Moving forward, he discovers his friends trapped in deadly scenarios. He solves a cog puzzle just in time to save Thomas and Dash from certain death and then works with them to complete a maze puzzle, freeing Samantha. They soon find Erin trapped in a glass box filling with water. Cole smashes the lock with a cog, narrowly saving her from drowning.
Realizing the danger is genuine, the group attempts to flee but is intercepted by Andrei, one of the mobsters from the club. Andrei kills Viktoria, knocks Cole unconscious, and kidnaps the others.
Cole awakens tied up in a small cell, where a screen shows Andrei murdering Samantha. While escaping through an air duct, he witnesses Dash being dismembered on a live broadcast meant to entertain Andrei's own twisted online fan base. Cole eventually finds Thomas, and they attempt to escape together, but Thomas is pushed down an elevator shaft by a guard.
Cole discovers Alexei's betrayal-he had collaborated with the mobsters to orchestrate the deadly trap. Cole then finds Erin tied to a chair. Andrei threatens her life, prompting Cole to attempt a rescue by shooting him, but he misses, and Andrei executes Erin in front of him. Cole is overpowered and dragged into another locked room.
Finding a small duct, Cole crawls into a large dark space where he confronts Alexei. Overwhelmed with rage and grief, he beats Alexei to death. Suddenly, the lights switch on, revealing Erin and his friends alive and unharmed. To Cole's horror, it is revealed the entire ordeal was an elaborate and cruel prank orchestrated by his friends to celebrate his channel's milestone. Every element of the escape room had been carefully planned to shock and terrify him.
As Cole sits next to Alexei's lifeless body, covered in blood, his millions of fans watch the live stream in real time, flooding the chat with horrified messages at the shocking turn of events.
