Eight years ago, Floortje Dessing visited the then peaceful Syria for the program 3 op Reis. She made an impressive journey right through the country, past famous places such as Krak des Chevalliers, Damascus and Palmyra. At the time, nothing indicated that the country was on the brink of a civil war and that it would be completely destroyed eight years later, with more than 300,000 dead and more than seven million refugees. Now she is going back to make the same journey, but against a completely different backdrop. She goes in search of the people she met then, and visits places she has been. What is daily life like in the capital Damascus? What happened to priest Paolo who welcomed people of all religions in his monastery? And how great is the destruction in the ancient temple city of Palmyra? And she meets new people; Syrians who have stayed in the country for various reasons. Such as the Syrian photographer Omar who trains young people to become journalists. How does he experience this war that has been going on for more than five years? Why did he stay while others left? And how can you even live a normal life in a country where so much has been destroyed?
