Synopsis

Finding Fanny revolves around five rather dysfunctional characters that live in the quaint sleepy village of Pocolim, nestled deep in the interior of Goa, India. Pocolim is a village where pointless conversations are a way of life. Nothing ever really happens here and the people of Pocolim, well, they just exist.

One night, the old postman Ferdie (Naseeruddin Shah), receives a letter that is slipped under his door.He realizes that it is the letter he had written 46 years ago to the love of his life, Stefanie Fernandes (Anjali Patil), asking for her hand in marriage. To his utter shock, he discovers that it had never been delivered. All these years Ferdie has lived a life of melancholy and regret, believing that Stefanie had rejected him. He decides to find his beloved Fanny (as he fondly called her) and tell her the truth. Where would she be after 46 years? Dead? Happily married? Would she even remember him? Or is Stefanie Fernandes merely a figment of Ferdie's imagination?

Four colorful characters from the village join the trip under random pretexts, though in actuality everyone wants a distraction from their mundane lives. A young virgin widow Angelina "Angie" (Deepika Padukone), a bitter mechanic Savio Gama (Arjun Kapoor), a belligerent artist Don Pedro Cleto Colaco (Pankaj Kapur) and an obnoxious self-appointed "Lady" of Pocolim, Mrs. Rosalina "Rosie" Eucharistica (Dimple Kapadia), also Angie's mother-in-law join Ferdie.

Angie is Ferdie's friend. Angie's husband Gabo, died on the day of his wedding. Don has come to Pocolim from outside & is a painter with voluptuous women as inspiration & loves Rosalina as a subject. Savio used to love Angie, but Angie went ahead and married Gabo. Savio left Pocolim after Angie's wedding to make his fortune in Mumbai & has now returned for his father's memorial service.

Angie wants to help Ferdie to help find Fanny (Stefanie Fernandes). They need a car. Pedro has just bought a car from Savio (his dad's old car). Angie offers Pedro a chance to spend time with his "subject" Rosalina, to entice him to loan the car. Then she entices Savio to come as a driver, by luring him with a chance to spend time with her. Finally, she blackmails Rosalina to come on the trip, by saying that it would be difficult to control her lust with Savio around on the trip.

On the journey, Ferdie throws Rosie's cat out of the window by accident whilst sneezing as he is allergic; so, to keep her unaware, he retrieves the dead cat and pretends that it is sleeping. When they finally reach Fanny's last known address, they find that Fanny sold it to a Russian Vladimir (Mihai Fusu) and moved to another part of Goa, 20 years ago.

During the trip Ferdie tells Salvio that Rosalina's husband Albert, didn't die. In fact, he abandoned a pregnant Rosalina for a woman in Madagascar & settled there permanently. Rosie had simply lied to the village for the sake of her pride. As they approach Tivoli, Ferdie thanks everyone for joining him on his journey - but unbeknownst to him, most of the other passengers have their own reasons for making the trip.Due to Ferdie's atrocious map reading, the group ends up lost in Karnataka. The group has to spend the night in an abandoned field in the middle of nowhere, when their petrol runs out.Pedro finally seduces Rosalina & she agrees that Pedro can make a portrait of her. Savio and Angie go away from the others to talk.Salvio reveals to Angie that he was merely a waiter in Mumbai & has no fortune. Angie tells Salvio that she accepted Gabo's proposal as Salvio never proposed. Salvia kisses Angie and she slaps him. They eventually talk and after realizing that they both still have feelings for each other, have sex that night.

In the morning, Ferdie goes to get petrol and comes back to find Rosie posing in the field for Don Pedro and Angie and Savio busy talking. The artist has now dropped his charming attitude of suave sophistication and is mistreating Rosie.Pedro makes a portrait of Rosalia, depicting her as a really fat woman in a seductive pose. She is mortified. After the painting is done, Pedro treats Rosalina with contempt and insult.

Ferdie is entrusted to fetch a can of petrol, which he does, but then take off leaving a note which thanks everyone's help in trying to find Fanny. The rest of them start to leave but Rosie refuses to go, saying that they can't leave Ferdie.Rosalina's has a breakdown & blames Salvio for Gabo's death. Rosalina says that Gabo only married Angie because Savio was in love with her.Salvio doesn't stay quiet & screams at Rosalina for being selfish & vain all her life. Salvio reveals that her cat is actually dead, but she hadn't even noticed, leaving everyone else to look after it. They bury the cat and set off home.

On the way, Rosie accidentally opens the glove compartment in the car and finds Savio's father's revolver. She puts it to her head, intending to shoot herself. When no one notices, she coughs and Savio sees his dad's revolver, which is an antique and worth a lot of money. He begins to wrestle with Rosie for the gun whilst driving, causing it to go off and Don Pedro gets shot in the head, without anyone noticing.

They turn the car around and go to look for Ferdie; finding him by the roadside waiting for the bus but can't pick him up as the car brakes fail. The back door of the car opens and when the car veers close to the cliff edge, Don Pedro's body falls out. The car eventually comes to a stop and Angie notices that Don Pedro has gone. Rosie says that he jumped out of the car to save himself, but Ferdie sees someone who he thinks is Don Pedro on a passing bus, while in fact, his body is at the bottom of the sea.

The group then carries on to Tivoli to find Fanny. They get to the village and see a funeral procession go past. Ferdie sees a woman that he thinks is Fanny, only to discover that she is Fanny's daughter (Anjali Patil) and the funeral procession is for Fanny. Ferdie is told by the daughter that Fanny was married four times and never even mentioned his name to her daughter, implying that he wasn't important to her. They go to the funeral and Angie muses that you can't wait for love, you must go out and find it.

Six months later, there is a wedding in the church. The couple is presumed to be Savio and Angie but is in fact, Ferdie and Rosie. The happy couple drives away into the sunset, leaving behind Angie and Savio kissing near the church as they leave.
