Synopsis

The film tells us a story about a separated couple, the struggle comedian Max Bernal (Bobby Cannavale) and his ex wife Jenna (Rose Byrne) leading with all difficulties that evolves the education of their Autistic son Ezra (William A. Fitzgerald). Regarding all recommendations from the fourth Ezra School, that suggests a traditional approach for Ezra ( special education, schools prepared to lead with disabilities, professionals specialised on disability, so on), Max, who actually lives with his father, Stan (Robert De Niro), an ex chef of success in New York that lived his whole life trying to change his explosive mood that culminated with his on separation and difficult relationship with his son, was tempted to create a different environment for his son Ezra, which was strategically thought outto give him a regular life in a regular school. He strongly believed that living excluded from the regular real life is not going to help his son to grow capable of leading with all difficulties that life demands.After a terrible incident, when Ezra accidentally heard his mother having a conversation with her new boyfriend, a lawyer (Tony Goldwyn) when he, joking, suggested that he could help her in leading with her son problems, contracting someone to eliminate him. Ezra run away from his home to the street and frightened by a dog, crossed to the other side without paying attention and was almost knocked down by a car.He was taken to the hospital where doctors wrongly convicted that Ezra tried to took away his life, obligated Ezra parents to put him in a special school and gave him drugs to control his impulses.Seeing that all his fears will be realised, Ezra father, Max, exploded against doctor, trying to avoid his decision. He was arrested and told to keep distance from Ezra for 3 months. And, unfortunately Ezra started immediately going to a special school and to took mood medicine, that was clearly making him sadness and worst than before.Max in an impulse of love and affection, decided to kidnap his son and took him to a trip crossing the country to met an old friend of him, Nick (Rainn Wilson). In the middle of the trip, Max had a notice that he was selected to participate, as a comedian, in a famous tv show, and he had to go, by himself, in a couple of weeks, to California. He decided to extend the trip with Max to there.Desperate by Ezra kidnapping, his mom, Jenna, convinced Max Dad, Stan, to go with her in rescue of Ezra.During the trip, Ezra, meeting regular people and leaving new life situations, started showing a new capacity of relationship, he had never allowed anyone to touch him, without giving an enormous shout, but facing new realities and new opportunities, he allowed a new friend and finally his own dad, to touch him. Broken this barrier that he had.At the end, they arrived to the local off the show, but police was there to arrest Max, as his wife had already went to the police who issued a warning against Max.Driven by an spontaneous feeling of protection, Ezra jumps over his father, in the moment he was being arrested, holding him and giving him an amazing emotional support.
