Nikolai Vasilievich Sazonov has been working in the police all his life. The bosses appreciate him for his past achievements, and the personnel officer believes that it is time for the major to retire. The new business, which Sazonov is taking on, seems hopeless to many colleagues: he is trying to find a man who disappeared during the blockade of Leningrad 18 years ago.
