On the planet Baab, admired astronaut Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is a national hero to the blue alien population. A master of daring rescues, Scorch pulls off astonishing feats with the quiet aid of his nerdy, by-the-rules brother, Gary (Rob Corddry), head of mission control at BASA. When BASA's no-nonsense chief Lena (Jessica Alba) informs the brothers of an SOS from a notoriously dangerous planet, Scorch rejects Gary's warnings and bounds off for yet another exciting mission. But when Scorch finds himself caught in a fiendish trap set by the evil Shanker (William Shatner) it's up to scrawny, risk-adverse Gary to do the real rescuing. As the interplanetary stakes rise to new heights, Gary is left to save his brother, his planet, his beloved wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and their adventure hungry son Kip.—The Weinstein Company
Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is a heroic alien on a mission to rescue captured babies from the Gnarlachs. He rescues them just in time before the Gnarlachs wake up. Scorch returns to Planet Baab where he is known as a famous hero and works at BASA with his older brother Gary (Rob Corddry). Gary's son Kip (Jonathan Morgan Heit) is a big fan of his uncle Scorch. Soon, Gary receives a message from Lena Thackleman (Jessica Alba), the head of BASA, that Scorch will be sent to the "Dark Planet" (the Baabians' name for Earth) due to a SOS call. Scorch decides to go to the Dark Planet, as he already made a press conference and contacted his sponsors. However, Gary opposes as Scorch is not serious and no alien has ever returned from the Dark Planet. After further arguing, Gary finally says that he won't be helping Scorch and quits BASA before Scorch himself fires him. Gary then goes home to his wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Kip only to find out that Scorch has already gone to the Dark Planet, while Kip is watching it on live TV in excitement.
An alien gets himself trapped on Earth and away from home after an accident. His team does everything to help bring him back home. Trapped on Earth, he does everything that he can to survive long enough until he is safely back home with his kind.—RECB3
Scorch Supernova (Brendan Fraser) is on a mission on planet Gnarlach to rescue captured Baabian babies from a rival species. Scorch then returns back to Planet Baab where he is known as a famous hero. Scorch is reckless and prefers style over safety or caution.
Scorch works at BASA (Baabian Aeronautics and Space Administration) (play on NASA) along with his older brother, Gary (Rob Corddry) (who is in mission control) and Gary's son Kip (Jonathan Morgan Heit) are.Gary is the one who guides Scorch through the most difficult parts of the mission and saves his life on numerous occasions, yet he receives no credit from Scorch, who hogs the limelight alone.Mr. James Bing (Ricky Gervais) is a talking computer who is programmed at BASA and who assists Gary in planning the missions and providing operational inputs.
Soon, Gary and Scorch receive a message from Lena (Jessica Alba ) the head of BASA, that Scorch will be sent to the "Dark Planet" (Earth) due to an SOS call. Scorch decides to go on the mission to the Dark planet and announces the same to the media without consulting Gary. Gary opposes the idea, knowing that any alien who goes to Earth never comes back, but Scorch accepts without his approval and says that he has already contacted all his sponsors.Media reporter Gabby Babblebrook is also a big fan of Scorch and he also reciprocates her feelings.
Scorch prepares his ship for launch while keep Gary busy in other tasks. Bing analyzes that 106 aliens have been reported missing on the Dark Planet and says that humans are a destructive species who are not even able to take care of their own planet. Gary can see that even Kip looks up to Scorch as his role model and hero and believes that his own father's job is boring.
Scorch believes that Gary has been trying to control him all his life, and that is also the reason why he joined BASA mission control in the first place. Gary realizes that Scorch is launching his ship in 30 minutes. Scorch reveals that he does not value Gary's work and says that he is the one taking all the risks in the field. Scorch says that he can complete any mission equally well without Gary. After further arguing finally Gary says that he won't be helping Scorch and quits BASA before Scorch can fire him. Gary then goes home to his wife Kira (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Kip only to find out that Scorch has already gone on the mission to the Dark planet, while Kip is watching it on live TV in excitement.
Scorch arrives on Earth and lands in the desert and finds a 7-Eleven convenience store but mistakes an inflatable figure for a dying being. Scorch is attacked by men is protective suits who try to capture him, but Scorch puts up a big fight. This time Gary is not in mission control to provide alternate escape routes to Scorch.Scorch is then tranquilized and captured by General William T. Shanker (William Shatner), the malevolent general of the US Army, and is taken to "Area 51" where aliens from other planets are held.
After finding that this has happened (as the whole thing was being televised live on planet Baab via an autonomous drone camera that was following Scorch during his mission on the Dark Planet), Kip wants to go rescue Scorch but Gary discourages him and he himself doesn't want to go. Kip is furious and goes to his room. Gary goes to Kip's room to apologize and admit he is sorry that Scorch has been captured. When Gary flips Kip's blanket open, instead of seeing Kip, he sees his dog and sees that Kip's window is open. Knowing that Kip is going to try and save Scorch, he rushes to BASA with Kira wearing his rocket boots and carrying Gary with her. They arrive to find that Kip is about to take off in a ship.
Gary manages to cancel the launch sequence, but he re-activates the sequence so Gary himself can rescue Scorch. He soon arrives on the Dark Planet. As soon as he arrives his ship immediately activates a self-destruct sequence by mistake, but Gary manages to get out.He then arrives at the same store that Scorch arrived at earlier. Gary goes inside the store but is spotted by two men inside named Hawk (Steve Zahn ) and Hammer (Chris Parnell). Both Gary and the two men get freaked out by each other and try to hide from each other. After the two men realize that Gary is not a hostile alien, they offer him a Slushie. Gary takes the Slushie but drinks it too fast and gets brain freeze. Afterwards, Shanker's men break into the store and capture Gary.
Gary is then taken to Shanker's office where he is quickly removed after Shanker receives an incoming call. It is then revealed that Lena is in love with Shanker as he puts on an Elvis Presley-like wig when contacting her. She has sent a reactor with the most powerful energy source in the galaxy, known as Blubonium (which is 10,000 times more powerful than Atomic energy), via Scorch's robotic suit, not knowing Shanker is only using her to get the energy sourceGary is placed in a cell hall with other alien geniuses named Doc (Craig Robinson) (a mouse-like alien), Io (Jane Lynch) (a giant cyclops-like alien from a Sun), and Thurman (George Lopez) (a three-eyed slug-like alien), who tell Gary that various human technology has been invented by them for Shanker to rip off and sell to the world so he will release them. For e.g., Thurman invented the touch screen technology, Doc invented the social network, and Io invented the search engine. Stuff like internet, mobile phones and computer animation was also invented by the aliens.
Gary reunites with his brother but is again annoyed by his conceited behavior as Scorch cannot digest that Gary has come to "rescue" him. After a food fight in the cafeteria, the aliens make their way to 'the peace shield'. The peace shield is the laser gun that Shanker has built by using the aliens in return of a promise to send them back home.Lena, meanwhile, has captured Kira, who stayed at BASA to try to contact Gary in concern for his safety. Kira had discovered that Gary's pod self-destructed, but only someone from BASA could have given that order. Lena then reveals her plan to give a lifetime supply of Blubonium to Shanker. Shanker needs the Blubonium to power his laser and uses the sample sent by Lena to destroy Haley's comet.
After Shanker reveals the Blubonium, Gary unintentionally provokes Scorch into stealing it after stating it's dangerous power and when being chased, Scorch destroys the Blubonium, causing Shanker to freeze him. He orders Gary to fix the Blubonium and reveals that he's going to destroy all of the alien planets with a laser ray the captured aliens have built. Shanker is angry because 3 of the imprisoned aliens (the Greys) accidentally killed his dad, when they first arrived on Earth on their spaceship when Shanker was 6.
Gary fixes the peace shield with help from his new friends, but Shanker goes back on his promise to release him and instead freezes him like his brother. The other aliens discover Shanker's true intentions when he tries to destroy Baab with the laser ray, it is revealed that Gary rigged the Blubonium to malfunction and destroy the laser ray, thereby releasing the captured aliens. With Gary and Scorch released from their icy prisons, the brothers, Doc, Thurman, and Io escape Area 51 and eventually find Scorch's ship in a trailer park. The brothers and their new friends escape Area 51 and head for Baab.
Meanwhile, back on Baab, Kip frees Kira, who subdues Lena after the latter takes off with a Blubonium shipment. US Air Force jets chase Scorch's ship, but Kip guides him through and manages to evade and destroy the jets. However, Shanker, wearing Scorch's robotic suit, uses a tractor beam to stop the ship in midair. Gary, followed by Scorch, jumps out and manages to get the suit off Shanker which causes them all to plummet. While free-falling, Gary and Scorch reconcile before they and Shanker are rescued by the Frey aliens, who helped Shanker due to their guilt of causing his father's death but have now turned against him after discovering his true agenda. Gary punch outs Shanker and returns to Baab where he and Scorch reunite with his family, while Lena is arrested.
Scorch is greeted as a hero but gives Gary the credit. To celebrate his return, Scorch marries his girlfriend, anchorwoman Gabby Babblebrook (Sofia Vergara), with Gary as his best man.
