World War II. German soldiers destroyed a Jewish village in Poland and slaughtered almost all of the residents. The few survivors gather in mourning and lament especially for Eli, a pious shepherd boy who, in the middle of the bloodbath, wanted to call God from heaven with the sound of his flute and was killed by a German soldier.—Ulf Kjell Gür
