After a visit to New York, Irina, a young Russian girl returns to her rural Siberian home and naively conspires with two friends, Nikolai and Zhanna, to take over their hometown and transform it into a cosmopolitan paradise. The three fantasize on the result, to completely different and nearly disastrous ends. Irina attempts to change her social and sexual outlook to fit American stereotypes, claiming to love Nikolai and then switch to a lesbian fixation on Zhanna. Nikolai envisions a heroic 1917-like revolution with him as the central hero. Zhanna has the simplest fantasy of all, a peaceful existence in a small town with the privileges of technology and culture. As they debate on how the transformation should work, the thrill of an American lifestyle slowly fades away.—Terek Gorodov
