Dulcima, oldest daughter in a poor and motherless family, seeks to escape her miserable home life. Having little opportunity in the rural area where she lives, Dulcima starts house cleaning for an older neighbor, the bitter and hard drinking Mr. Parker. He falls in love with the free spirited young woman and moves her in whereupon they begin a carnal relationship. A younger man enters the picture as a land surveyor and Dulcima sees him as a more attractive way of escaping to an exciting life in the city. But will Mr. Parker let her go so easily?—Marianne
