Dreamcatcher Bios features the stories of amazing, globally successful game changers and shows how their Indigenous spirit got them to the top.
The Dreamcatcher Bios is a 13 x 22-minute documentary series that tells the life stories of amazing, globally successful game changers and how their Indigenous spirit got them to the top. Each week, our young audience will be inspired through the stories of their role models in popular culture. Our Dene host will help us follow along through the tribulations our heroes endure and the eventual triumphs that they celebrate. We will explore how these people beat the odds, to make it big as the elite actors, athletes, astronauts, and musicians we all know and love.—Anik Filion
Dreamcatcher Bios takes the viewer beyond token newspaper headlines and three-minute news pieces, offering a behind-the-scenes experience across Turtle Island into the lives of some of the biggest Indigenous names in pop culture both historically and presently.
We cover the spectrum of success - from pop stars like Taboo from the Black Eyed Peas, Grammy award-winning Rita Coolidge; and thrash metal god Chuck Billy from Testament. We dig into the lives of elite athletes like 2-time Stanley Cup winner Dwight King, and Olympic Gold winner and record holder Billy Mills. We uncover stories of tremendous bravery and success with lesser known trailblazers like NASA astronaut John Harrington's space mission; Canada's own duet Digging Roots: and the Seminole Indians rise to infamy. We go to Hollywood to follow actors like: Dances with Wolves and The Twilight Saga's Graham Greene, heavy weight Wes Studi from Last of the Mohicans and Avatar, and Canadian icon Tantoo Cardinal; and the Hawaiian actress Tia Carrere.
These heroes represent their Indigenous culture in a way that makes the world proud.
We'll get to know our heroes, both in their homes and through their inner circles, on tarmacs, red carpets, at cocktail parties, and on the big stages and screens of the world. Throughout the journey we learn about their ambitions and goals, the challenges they faced, and the adversities they overcame to get where they are today.
We will witness how they have overcome seemingly impossible obstacles to achieve their dreams. We will meet the people in their communities who believed and supported them even when times were tough. From homelessness, poverty, loss, injuries, and rejection our heroes persevered to achieve their goals with vision and focus.
This series explores the collective experience, taking a closer look at how our heroes have tackled the same challenges that too many of our First Nations face. Our heroes will motivate our audience by showing all of us that perseverance can be magical, most certainty inspiring, and sometimes, even life changing.
