Dovey Roundtree receives a call from Martha Crump, the mother of Raymond Crump, asking her to help her son. From visiting him in jail, Dovey realizes how helpless Raymond is. But, she believes in his innocence and decides to represent him for one dollar. Against a bevy of federal prosecutors, it is Dovey and her trusted paralegal, Terrence "Ryle" Reilly, an old retired DC lawyer of some renown. The trial starts with the prosecution's witnesses, but Dovey, with help from Ryle, is able to flip most of them into her witnesses. It's during the trial that Dovey first learns of the romantic connection between the victim Mary Pinchot Meyer and President John F. Kennedy. Ultimately, a harrowing event that affects Ryle causes Dovey to accelerate her defense and go directly to her impassioned Closing Argument to the Jury. But, the announcement of the verdict brings a surprise and some chaos to the courtroom.
