Two best friends, Vijay and Ravi, fall in love with the same girl, Sheetal. Misunderstandings due to their respective careers and people with vested interests cause them to become rivals.
Vijay Varma (Amitabh Bachchan) and Ravi Kapoor (Shatrughan Sinha) are two close childhood friends. When they thought they have matured enough they decides to enter law policy: one as a police officer and another as a lawyer. There lives takes a turn when both reaches a woman named Sheetal Sahni (Zeenat Aman) at different places and time respectively. Both fell in love with her and does not relate each others emotion to one another. Vijay has an insider informant in Daaga's organization & uses that to confront Balwant (Amrish Puri) when he is taking delivery of a cache of illegal gold. Balwant manages to escape and hide at a safe-house.The informant is Tony (Pran) who refuses to tell Vijay where he gets his information from. Vijay pays Tony 10% of the arrested consignment as his commission.Tony also tells Vijay about Balwants safe-house and Vijay arrests him there.
Ravi fights Balwant's case & produces false documents to secure Balwant's release. Ravi claims that Balwant was hospitalized on the day Vijay claims that he was at the docks to receiving the smuggled gold consignment. Ravi the says that Balwant was depositing company cash to the bank, when he was confronted by Vijay in plain clothes and a gun. Balwant believed that he was being robbed and hence tried to run away and even shot at Vijay with a licensed gun in self-defense.
One day both Vijay and Ravi meet Sheetal (Zeenat Aman). Sheetal was eve teased and brings the person to the police station where Vijay met her. Vijay gives Sheetal a lecture on dressing conservatively to avoid eve teasing. Ravi meets Sheetal at a party and flirts with her. Vijay is invited to the same party and is introduced to Sheetal by her father.Vijay and Ravi both woo and date Sheetal over a period of time. Sheetal also likes Vijay as she is impressed with his daredevil persona. Ravi and Vijay both fall in love with her. Vijay's love is more serious.
Vijay arrests Rs 80 Lakhs worth of Daaga's gold on yet another tip from Tony. Daaga is tired of Vijay & asks Ravi to help him buy off Vijay for Rs 10 Lakhs. Ravi flatly refuses, saying that Vijay is honest police officer & his integrity cannot be bought.Daaga decides to have his men observe Vijay to figure out whom he meets and maybe that way find out who the informant is. Daaga's man photographs Vijay meeting Sheetal.Ravi admits his love for Sheetal to Vijay, by showing him a brand-new mansion that he has built specifically for Sheetal. Vijay is devastated but decides to sacrifice his love for Ravi's sake, without telling Ravi.
Vijay professes his dilemma to Sheetal in a letter and asks her to marry Ravi. Vijay delivers the letter to Sheetal's house, but it is taken to Ravi's mansion because Sheetal was attending a party there. The letter is delivered to Ravi.However, there is a misunderstanding when Daaga decides to stir up Vijay and Ravi's friendship by showing Ravi a photo of Vijay and Sheetal. Vijay and Ravi become rivals for the first time.
Upon learning that Ravi wants to marry her, Sheetal decides to leave town with Vijay. Vijay tells Sheetal that he cannot betray Ravi and asks her to think it over.Ravi confronts Vijay about Sheetal and even slaps him while ending his friendship with Vijay. Ravi thinks that Vijay is trying to betray Ravi behind his back by playing some sort of a double game with Sheetal.
Ravi decides to partner with Daaga to destroy Vijay's reputation. Daaga's men attack Vijay at home and set his house on fire. Vijay barely manages to escape with his life.Tony informs Vijay about another shipment of gold, but this time Ravi realizes that Vijay probably knows about the shipment & switches the landing location at the last minute, foxing Vijay for the first time.Vijay confronts Tony for the false information. Tony tells Vijay that years earlier he used to be a checkpoint supervisor on the Bombay - Goa highway & was approached by Daaga's gang to help their smuggling in exchange for money. But Tony refused and got one of Daaga's shipments arrested. Daaga responded by setting a truck upon his family, which kills his wife & maims his child, Jhonny, for life. Thats why Tony turned police informant against Daaga's gang.
Vijay gets renewed motivation to defeat Daaga & arrests shipment of Rs 2 Crores. Daaga tries to kill Vijay, but he escapes.Tony reveals that his source within Daaga's organization is Daaga's mistress Silvia (Helen). Silvia is the sister of Tony's dead wife & is helping Tony to avenge her death. She reveals the whereabouts of Daaga's bookkeeper, whose accounts can send Daaga to jail. Daaga sends his men into the jail locker to murder his bookkeeper. Vijay is suspended as his seniors believe that the bookkeeper died due to his torture.
Sheetal approaches all lawyers to get someone to fight Vijay's case, but everyone refuses. She finally approaches Ravi. Ravi agrees to fight for Vijay only if Sheetal agrees to sleep with him. Sheetal agrees. Ravi fights the case & proves Vijay's innocence.At home, he comes across a letter that Vijay had written to Sheetal, asking Sheetal to marry Ravi as Ravi really loved him. Ravi realizes his mistake. He apologizes to Vijay & both become friends once more. But Daaga kidnaps Ravi & Sheetal, as he is angry with Ravi for securing Vijay's release.
Vijay arrives at Daaga's hideout & is captured. Daaga tortures Ravi, Vijay & Sheetal for the name of the informer. Finally, Silviya reveals herself as the informant. She manages to release the 3 but is shot by Daaga. Daaga tries to escape in his plane but is stopped by Vijay and Ravi. Finally, Vijay shoots Daaga when Daaga tries to shoot Vijay and Daaga dies.
