Upper-class millionaires vacation in the mountains, engage in romantic entanglements, until a rich American woman joins their circle, disrupting the status quo.

Ludvig and Sussi Battwyhl, Louis and Katja Brenner and Julia and Kurt Balzar are upper class millionaires. They don't seem to do any real work but still need a vacation in the mountains. Everybody seems to be romantically involved with everybody. A rich American woman joins them.—Mattias Thuresson

Three married men are close friends since childhood. The wives have become friends as well, but their relationship is strained. One of them, the actress Julia Balzar, is unhappy, because her husband, the managing director Kurt Balzar, isn't interested in her anymore and only loves his company, Sveaverken. Julia turns her disappointment into sarcastic remarks upon him and the other two couples. She jokes constantly about all the wives being in love with another husband than their own. This makes especially Sussi Brenner upset, who is already on the brink of a nervous breakdown. Six months ago her child died and now her husband, lieutenant Louis Brenner, has almost spoiled their economy on gambling. When Louis incurs gambling debts of 50.000 Swedish crowns Julia wants to help him escape penalty. She sells all her shares in Sveaverken, which causes severe problems for her husband, who is just trying to get bond loans for his company. He now must get new money invested in the company to show its solidity, and sets his hopes on a rich American relative, Mrs. Mary Jonston, who is coming to Sweden. She is going to Åre for a skiing holiday, just as the three couples. When she meets them she is amused of their matrimonial tangle, and intervenes to help them disentangle it. She falls in love with Dr. Jonson at the sanatorium near by, but he seems to be totally uninterested in her and all her millions of dollars. She has finally met her match.—Maths Jesperson {[email protected]}

Three upper class Stockholm couples --- Julia and Kurt Balzar, Sussi and Lt. Louis Brenner, and Countess Katja (Birgit Tengroth) and Count Ludwig von Battwyhl (Håkan Westergren) --- consider this collective their best friends, despite the unease that exists below the surface, that unease which sometimes bubbles to the surface. There is also some marital discord. Actress Julia (Ingrid Bergman), with a flair for the dramatic, feels neglected by industrialist Kurt (Georg Rydeberg), whose seeming primary love is his financially struggling company, Sveaverken. While Sussi (Tutta Rolf) and Louis (Kotti Chave) are still grieving in their infant daughter having passed only a few months ago, Sussi is worried about Louis' seeming out- of-control gambling habit. The unease that exists between the couples largely stems from each believing his or her spouse has his/her eye on another within the group, the most open of those feelings by insecure Sussi who believes Louis and Julia are having an affair. Sussi may be right as demonstrated by something that Julia secretly does to keep Louis out of criminal trouble. Julia in turn wishes it was another woman in her marriage, as she could compete on an even playing field, something she can't do with Sveaverken. Their collective situation may be blown wide open with the arrival onto the scene of Mary Jonston (Elsa Burnett), Kurt's cousin from Chicago --- she always colloquially referred to by the group as "The American" --- who he and Julia have to impress if she is to invest in Sveaverken and thus save the company. While Mary always believes she's right about everything --- especially human nature --- states as much, and is not often challenged in being wealthy, she may be thrown off track in her love/hate relationship with Åre-based physician Dr. Jonson (Edvin Adolphson).—Huggo

Three wealthy couples (all related to each other by marriage) have been friends for years, and teasing each other is just part of their normal banter. They flirt with each other, they try to make each other jealous, and it seems fairly harmless. However, when one of the husbands amasses a huge gambling debt but is financially rescued by his sister-in-law, everyone is wondering if all of the flirtatious banter is really covering up an actual affair. Things get even more complicated when the six go on a skiing trip together and a brash but wealthy American cousin joins the group.
