Synopsis

Three different people and their different perspectives on love. Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) does not believe in love. He thinks it is impossible for two people to be together for their entire lives. Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) believes that somebody has been made for her, all she has to do is meet them. Finally, Nisha (Karisma Kapoor) believes that love is friendship, she believes that when a boy and girl are friends they are destined to fall in love.

Rahul and Nisha are best friends who both share a passion for dancing. They have worked together in many musicals. Rahul announces his desire to direct a new musical called 'Maya' which focuses on a girl who every man dreams about. Rahul announces that he will launch a new show in 3 months.

Rahul writes up a script and shows it to Nisha. The members of the troupe, including Nisha, have their doubts about the title character, "Maya," who Rahul describes as a girl who believes in true love, and who is waiting for her prince charming, who she believes will surely turn up and take her away.Nisha thinks the script is not realistic enough (as the character Maya lives in her dream world and doesn't want to be practical like modern girls) but after persuasion, Nisha is cast to play the role of Maya.

Rahul is the director of the musical and his staff includes Shruti (Shruti Ulfat), Ballu (Balvinder Singh Suri) who handles the lighting arrangements on the show, Supandi (Suresh Menon), Raju (Rajesh Tandon), Soni (Priya Varma), and others.

Because Rahul does not believe in love, he sees Nisha only as his best friend whereas Nisha is secretly in love with Rahul but never plucks up the courage to tell him.The troupe welcomes a new entrant, Pooja, who is an amazing and classically trained dancer who is passionate about dancing.

Pooja is an orphan. Ever since her parents died when she was very young, Pooja has been raised by their close friends (Ajay's mother Shanti (Farida Jalal) and his father (Deven Verma)), who wish to see Pooja marry their only son Ajay (Akshay Kumar). Anjali (Shivani Wazir) is Pooja's good friend who is marrying a person not chosen by her but selected by her parents. Anjali says that love develops with time.

Pooja is soon taken to Germany by her foster parent's son Ajay, her childhood best friend who has been working in London. Just as Ajay leaves to fly back to London, he proposes to Pooja. In a dilemma, Pooja ends up accepting his marriage proposal. Although Pooja does not feel Ajay is the one for her, she agrees to marry him, because she feels obliged to his parents for taking her in. Pooja is also a very talented dancer.

One night Rahul, Nisha and some members of their dancing troupe go out for Valentine's Day. Rahul tells Nisha that he believes it is all nonsense as he thinks that none of the couples at the party could possibly be in love. Nisha disagrees with Rahul's view.

On a number of occasions, Rahul and Pooja coincidentally come across one other but do not speak. Each of these instances is marked by Rahil playing a whistling tune in the background, which registers with Pooja.

On Nisha's birthday, she gets really drunk and tells Rahul that she is in love with him. Later, Nisha injures her leg, and her doctor says that she cannot dance for a long time. Rahul goes out looking for another girl for the role in the play.

Rahul discovers Pooja dancing one day and realizes that she is perfect for the role. He begs her to come to their rehearsals and after much hesitation, she agrees. Rahul and Pooja quickly become friendly, and Pooja works well with the rest of the group. She and Rahul start finding themselves falling for each other but at the same time try to keep their distance from one another. Nisha soon recovers and on returning notices that Pooja and Rahul are in love. Although devastated, she wants only the best for Rahul and decides to leave for London in order to allow them to come together.

Throughout rehearsals, Rahul and Pooja find themselves falling for one another. When Rahul drops Pooja home one day, he starts whistling his tune, making Pooja realize that she has fallen for the man with the tune she so often heard.

Pooja and Rahul go to visit Pooja's old dance tutor (Aruna Irani). Pooja's tutor thinks it is obvious that Pooja is in love with Rahul, but Pooja keeps denying it (although inside she knows she does love him but cannot express it due to her engagement with Ajay).

Later, it is the wedding of two members of the dance troupe. At the wedding, Pooja and Rahul finally confess their love for one another. Rahul and Pooja share an intimate moment but are unsure how to express their love for each other.

However, problems arise when Ajay who has been in London for a long time tells Pooja and his mother that he is returning and wishes to marry Pooja as soon as possible. Ajay arrives and Rahul learns that he is Pooja's fiance, Rahul is heartbroken. Nisha, who has returned from London realizes that Rahul is hurt and tries to comfort him.

Rahul edits the end of the play to reflect his heartbreak, in contrast to his usual style of always giving a happy ending.

On the night of the premiere, as Rahul and Pooja's characters are about to break up on stage, Ajay plays a recorded tape Pooja was going to send him before his proposal, where she described how she felt about Rahul. Ajay is indirectly telling Pooja that she and Rahul are meant to be together. Pooja now realizes she truly loves Rahul and the two confess their love on stage as the audience applauds them, giving the play a happy ending once again. Backstage, Ajay ends up asking Nisha whether she is already married or not, implying his interest in her.
