Inspector Harry Dawson, who has been suspended because of his idiosyncratic methods, gets unwillingly a job - murder in his own family. The only clues: a poodle, a man in a wheelchair and "the chain" ("Die Kette") apparently do not make any connection - but they lead on a track.
